Impression BookIsh Plaza @ Arubadag

Photo Impression Genootschap Ned Aruba 2012

2013 Arubadag, last Sunday, was once again a fascinating happening. It’s the day Arubans celebrate their Flag and National Anthem with music, singing, dancing, the Aruban cuisine and literature.
And being of born and bred proud Arubans, of course we couldn’t miss this one out. Naturally we were there also spreading the passion for literature like we always do.

BookIsh Plaza had a bookstand with Aruban authors’ books and books by other Caribbean authors, from children’s books, to history books, novels and poetry.  It was nice conversing with our readers and amazing to see people interested in literature from the islands.

Our published author Quito Nicolaas was there to sign his work and to speak to his fan base.

We had a great time and are looking forward for next year.

Poet/Writer Quito Nicolaas Donates Books

5 09 2012

Aruban poet/writer Quito Nicolaas donates a set of his books to school libraries in Curaçao and Bonaire (Dutch Caribbean).

Last June teachers of the secondary schools MIL and the Radulphus College in Curaçao were very pleased to receive a set of books by the author, like the novel Verborgen Leegte [Hidden Emptiness] and Bos pa Planta [Constructing Voices], among others. The set consists mostly of poetry books, a novel and short stories. They are written in different languages and the native tongue Papiamento.

proud teachers of MIL showing the books

The idea according to Nicolaas is to stimulate reading of local authors amongst the youth, to discuss them in literary classes and maybe read it for their exams. The schools were very pleased with this gesture by the author.

the RC teachers also rejoiced

At the beginning of the year he donated also a set of books to the OSB in Bonaire.

Booklaunch “Meerstemmig Verleden” on Dutch Slavery Past

5 11 2011

On tuesday November 15th the book Meerstemmig Verleden will be presented at 8.00 p.m. at De Nieuwe Liefde, Da Costakade 2, Amsterdam. There will be a debate on different representations of the Dutch slavery past (in response to the tv series De Slavernij), stories, music and cabaret.

The book is published by KIT Publishers and gives personal accounts of how people view slavery. It is the result of the project of the Foundation Colorful Past about Dutch slavery past.

Aruban poet/writer Quito Nicolaas is one of the persons interviewed. He emphasizes the responsibility of the Creole-Surinamese community in gathering personal stories of the slavery experience. Helga Fredison put the emancipation struggle of her famous great-uncle Anton de Kom and Eddy Caffé is still deeply connected to the Church where his great-grandfather worked as a slave. By accommodating these personal stories creates a nuanced picture of the legacy of the Dutch slavery past. A nuance that is lacking in debates.

TICKETS are obtained @ De Nieuwe Liefde

“Meerstemmig Verleden” soon available @ BookIsh Plaza

2 11 2011

BookIsh Plaza just received two books by the Aruban poet Rosabelle Illes. Her latest is called Spiel di mi Alma [Mirror of my soul] (2010) in Papiamento* where she reflects on society, her own role and appeal to others to make the step for change. Her poetry are made to be performed. That is what she also does.

Last year at the book launch of Spiel di mi Alma it was a complete performance using different disciplines of the art. See an impression of the night @ eneryvibes’s blog The book is beautifully illustrated by different contemporary young artists.

* Papiamento/u is the language spoken on the islands of Aruba, Curaçao & Bonaire.

BookIsh Plaza also has her debut poetry book Beyond Insanity that is written in English. In this publication she explores the state of being insane and beyond that. What are the limits if you go there. It’s all about letting go and explore the unknown borders of the mind. The book is richly illustrated by one of the finest contemporary artists of Aruba, Nigel Matthew.
