And the Nobel Literary Prize goes to……

1 11 2018

Alternative Nobel literature prize goes to Maryse Condé

The New Academy prize, organised to fill the gap left by the cancellation of 2018’s official award, goes to Guadeloupean novelist.

Guadeloupean novelist Maryse Condé has been announced as the winner of the New Academy prize in literature, a one-off award intended to fill the void left by the cancellation of this year’s scandal-dogged Nobel prize for literature.

Speaking on a video played at a ceremony in Stockholm, Condé said she was “very happy and proud” to win the award. “But please allow me to share it with my family, my friends and above all the people of Guadeloupe, who will be thrilled and touched seeing me receive this prize,” she said. “We are such a small country, only mentioned when there are hurricanes or earthquakes and things like that. Now we are so happy to be recognised for something else.”

The author of some 20 novels, including Desirada, Segu and Crossing the Mangrove, Condé is, according to the chair of judges Ann Pålsson, a “grand storyteller” who “belongs to world literature”.

“She describes the ravages of colonialism and the post-colonial chaos in a language which is both precise and overwhelming,” Pålsson said. “The dead live in her stories closely to the living in a … world where gender, race and class are constantly turned over in new constellations.”

The winner was announced at a Stockholm library – a stark contrast to the baroque splendour of the Swedish Academy – after a three-fold judging process. Unlike the secretive deliberations of the Nobel jury, the New Academy prize saw Swedish librarians nominate authors, who were winnowed down to a final four by a public vote, the winner decided by an expert jury.

Classic of the Dutch Caribbean Literature Reprinted

6 02 2018

DE ROTS DER STRUIKELING [Life’s Obstacles, ed.] is a classic from the Dutch Caribbean literature. The novel tells the story of Eddy Lejeune, who reflects on his turbulent life.

Eddy Lejeune comes in search for diamonds in Venezuela mysteriously to his end. The story is told in a journalistic manner and begins at the end of his life. Before that, his high school years are described, his growing up in a foster home, the war that overtakes him as a student, the war camp. Particularly his war experiences prove to be a major influence on his thinking.

For this book Boeli van Leeuwen from Curaçao was rewarded the Vijverberg Prize (the present Bordewijk Prize) in Holland. In 1983 he received the Cola Debrot prize, the most important Antillian cultural distinction, for his literary work.

20 New Papiamento Children’s Books Published

12 01 2018

20 New Papiamento children’s books were developed by the Language Project of the Department of Education in Aruba for use in the primary schools and the exam classes of the secondary schools. Papiamento is a creole language exclusively spoken on the islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire (Caribbean).

A group of local collaborators, but also internacional persons, wrote, translated, illustrated and edited the material. A varied offer of original works and three translations was the result.

The themes of the books were selected according to the age group. For the primary schools the topics are: friendship, bullying, nature conservation, sports, stamina and teambuilding. Topics selected for the teens are: peer pressure, love, social life, teen pregnancy and drug abuse.

Authors who collaborated are: Desiree Croes, Lorena Boekhoudt-Almary, Beth Briñez Albertsz, Danielle Janga, Marvis Engelhardt, Shaila Vrolijk, Desiree Correa, Yolanda Croes, Diana Marchena-Martes, Ria Arrindell-Broeks, Gina Ramsbottom, Diana Lebacs (Curaçao), Loekie Morales (St. Maarten) and Sally Green (England).

The books are not for sale, but are available at the local library in Aruba.
